Good music is better than sex?? Maybe, maybe not. But once you read this book, we bet you’ll be making the comparison in your mind a little more often!
Judy Core was in search of her “Old Blue Chair” – the same “Old Blue Chair” that Kenny Chesney sings about in his song of the same name. Judy’s search ultimately gave music lovers a gift with her book Good Music is Better Than Sex, My Search for the Old Blue Chair. You don’t have to be a Chesney lover to love this book; the book hardly focuses on him, instead putting to paper the overwhelming bond we all share with music. We’ve all had those moments when we’re listening to the radio, a new song comes on, and as you listen to learn the new lyrics, the song hits you right in the heart and instantly becomes a soundtrack to your life. This book focuses on that connection and what a major part of our lives music really is.
Judy candidly reveals her personal struggles with alcoholism, depression, and failed marriages, and then takes us along her journey of re-building her life. She is not only open with her struggles, but also brutally honest which may encourage you to explore your own truths, whatever those may be.
In the forward to this book, Judy describes music in the same form that we would describe her book. She writes “You feel something but you just can’t get it out of your mouth. You aren’t communicating well. You can’t seem to get the other person to understand what you mean. It’s frustrating. It’s a loss of your voice. But then you hear a song. Yes, yes!! That is it! That is exactly how I feel. Thank you, Mr. or Ms. Songwriter! It is cathartic. It is a release. It becomes your voice.” When reading this book for the first time, I had that very same thought about her words – yes, yes, YES, someone else gets MY connection to music!!
The book isn’t an extremely long read, but you will need a couple of hours because once you pick up the book, you won’t be able to put it down until you’re finished. And even when it’s over, you may start right back at the beginning because you’re just not ready for it to be done yet…at least, that’s what happened to me. I’ve read the book a handful of times and will continue to read it cover to cover. This isn’t just a fun story that’s a good read, but rather a book that is a true story about my life. No I didn’t write the book and I haven’t lived Judy’s troubles…but I have lived my own stories, and the one constant that has accompanied me and guided me through my own journey is music.
So is good music really better than sex? I invite you to read the book and decide for yourself…I, however, already know my answer.
