Carrie Underwood is set to headline the “Salute to the Troops Concert” on August 14 for the Soldiers and families of Fort Campbell, KY, whose 101st Airborne Division is returning from their service in the Middle East. Other stars such as Jake Owen, Rodney Atkins, and John Rich will also take part in the two-day celebration.
“People just expect there to be a military, but they don’t see faces and they don’t know names,” Underwood said. “It’s very important to just go and raise awareness and bring some cheer to people who might not get it all the time, people who are stuck in another country, away from their family and friends and kids.”
The concert is held every other year for the “Screaming Eagles” who have returned to base after overseas deployments, but this is the first time the concert has been a two-day event. The free concerts on Aug. 14-15 kick off a week of events (the “Week of the Eagles”) that also includes a 10K/5K run, an air show, a tribute to Vietnam veterans and several other events also open to the public.
