Darius Rucker – “The Country Singer”

July 8th, 2009

Darius Rucker

Darius Rucker has found much success since crossing over to the country music world with two consecutive No. 1 hits, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” and “It Won’t Be Like This For Long.”  Certainly being the front man for Hootie & The Blowfish didn’t hurt Darius – although not a country band, fans knew the familiar face and sound of Darius as “Hootie.”  To this day, fans still make the comparison, but clearly Darius is establishing his himself with his country music.  He recently told The Tennessean of a moment that happened while checking into a hotel that surprised him and made him realize that he’s making it in country music.  “It’s the same hotel I stay in all the time, and there’s a new clerk back there and she’s looking at me and staring at me and I’m expecting ‘Hey, aren’t you Hootie’ or ‘Aren’t you the guy from Hootie and the Blowfish.’ And she looked at me and said, ‘Aren’t you Darius Rucker the country singer. It really took me back,’ said Rucker.

Although Darius vows that Hootie & The Blowfish will record new music and perform together again in the future, it’s clear that Darius is happy to do the work to make it in country music.  “There was never a full-page ad in Billboard magazine saying ‘The new Darius Rucker album is coming out. Darius has gone country, and here’s his first single.’ There wasn’t any of that. It was me in the car with a buddy driving around to 85 radio stations,” Rucker said.

Rucker has tour dates lined up through the end of the year, on his own and as part of Rascal Flatts’ “Unstoppable Tour.”
