2010
A lot has happened since we last spoke with Josh Thompson back in February. His debut album, Way Out Here, was released, he’s had two top 20 singles, and he’s currently on tour with country music superstar, Brad Paisley.
We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Thompson about life on the road, new music, and more.
CMIL: You’re currently out on Brad Paisley’s H2O Tour. Brad is obviously a great entertainer, have you learned anything from him so far?
JT: Absolutely, I watch the show almost every night. So far the number one thing I get from Brad is how he treats people. He’s obviously at the top of this industry and at the top of his game and he’s still very accessable backstage and talks to everybody and just a really nice guy.
CMIL: Here’s a question everyone wants to know…Have there been any pranks on the Paisley tour this year?
JT: No, I just kind of live by the rule where you just don’t strike first. (laughs)
CMIL: I’ve read that you and one of your tour mates, Justin Moore, have struck up quite a friendship. Any plans to tour with him?
JT: Anything is a possibility and I would love that. We’ve talked about it on several occasions, but ya know of course talking about it and making it happen are two different things but we’re probably gonna try to do something like that.
CMIL: Do you ever get to enjoy the cities that you play in while on the road?
JT: We try to find a little time here and there when we’re on the road if we’re in a cool place to go take in some of the sights and sceneries, but I don’t have a whole lot of time for just hanging out.
CMIL: I hear you’ve upgraded from Van-A-White to a tour bus.
JT: I’ve been in the bus since April 8th. Van-A-White has gone to a guy here in Nashville that started his own car service business.
CMIL: Will you miss “her?”
JT: It’s good, I still see it all the time. He [the new owner] told me,”‘Man if you ever need me to pick you up and drive you around in it because you miss it, just let me know.”
CMIL: You’ve been getting a great response to the second single, “Way Out Here,” does the song resonate with fans from all over, or just those from rural areas?
JT: I do. It doesn’t matter if I’m playing in the city or out in the sticks somewhere, the song is relateable to people that carry themselves like that and you know, get up in the morning and do their work and dont sit and wait for handouts. Its relatable to a lot of people all over America. People go crazy and they sing every word [to "Beer On The Table"], but “Way Out Here” is starting to rival that.
CMIL: What’s it like to have your own fan club and what can fans expect to get when they join The Chrome Bullet Crew?
JT: It’s awesome. I love the fact that people are wanting to join and I try to give those people a little something extra that is a harder to find…the unreleased tracks and defintiely meet and greets. It’s almost like a big bunch of friends you got right there and now, I’m starting to meet a couple of them more and more so I’m knowing them by name and everything. It’s good.”
CMIL: There’s probably a lot of beer and little time for exercise while on tour. How do you stay fit while out on the road?
JT: I really try to watching what I’m eating. You travel so much and there’s not so much time for working out so if you don’t watch what you eat, you can get into some trouble. I definitely try to make it a point to eat right.
CMIL: We asked for some fans to submit questions and we usually don’t like to ask personal or inappropriate ones…
JT: What are some of the inappropriate ones, I love that! (laughs)
CMIL: One of our readers, Ashley, wants to know if you’re single?!
JT: Yes.
As for new music, Thompson tells us “there will at least be one more single from this record” and that he’s currently working on his second album.
“I’m concentrating on the sophomore record and what it’s gonna sound like and the kind of things I’d like to say. It’s always a work in progress.”
