“Long Time Gone” was a big hit for the Dixie Chicks back in 2002, and it seems that the title is quite fitting for lead singer Natalie Maines and her current relations, or lack there of, with country music. While tweeting with fans during the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards this past Sunday night, Maines made it a point on several occasions to put as much distance between her and the country music world as possible.
Upon realizing that Maines wasn’t aware of who Jason Aldean was during his performance of “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with Kelly Clarkson, one fan stated “U simply can’t be that far removed from country music.” As it turns out, Maines actually is, or at least claims to be, that far removed. To that fan, Maines replied “I can’t? I haven’t been aware of country music in at least 6 years. It’s not my thing.”
When another one of her followers expressed disbelief that Maines wasn’t aware of Aldean, Maines reiterated her stance on today’s country music, saying “I’m very out of that world.”
Maines admits that at one point in her career, she followed mainstream country but only because she felt like she had a responsibility to do so. That responsibility, she says, is gone.
“I used to follow it because I felt it was my job to know what was going on. I don’t think that anymore;),” Maines replied to an inquiring fan on Twitter.
One country star that the Dixie Chick is aware of is Taylor Swift. She even went so far as to semi-compliment her GRAMMY performance, tweeting “Haven’t seen anybody make the banjo look sexy since [fellow Dixie Chicks star] Emily Robison.#goodjobtaylorswift”.
One fan reminded Maines that it was country music that had made her a star and granted her fame and fortune. Natalie assured that follower that Dixie Chicks fans are still in her heart by responding “I still love and appreciate DC fans.”
Throughout the rest of the awards telecast, Maines continued to give her thoughts on singers of all different genres, praising both Jennifer Hudson and Adele, while criticizing Chris Brown.

So she basically admitted she was a fraud the whole time she was making a fortune off country fans.

I’m sorry but I don’t buy that. As a country artist, present or former, you can’t be THAT far removed from the genre that gave you what you have now. I think she’s just saying all this to be argumentative. Unless she never listens to a radio, never gets on iTunes, never goes to a mall, never turns on the TV, then she’s gonna hear at least a little bit about country music. Which by the way s better now than it has been in quite a while.

I think Ms. Maines should get that chip off her shoulder. The country community was not the only one who was upset with her comment. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and entitled to let that opinion be known. However, when you DO voice your opinion you had better be prepared for a backlash from someone. By the sound of her Tweets she is still talking smack and alienating even more of her fan base/followers. It’s ok though, by the sounds of it the country community is better off with her distancing herself.

Ms.Maines should perhaps stop biting the hands that fed her and realize her food dish is empty and W is no longer the pres. That and I fail to see ANY viable contribution she is making at the moment. No longer relevant and really, no one cares. When your cds can be found, en masse, at the goodwill stores, perhaps she needs to buy a clue!

While I don’t like that she completely tries to wash away the genre, I can see where she is coming from. You have to remember that Country radio wanted NOTHING to do with the Dixie Chicks after Natalie made her statement (which today really seems like nothing compared to what other artists have said about Bush and even the Merle Haggard/President Obama comment was worse!) I think the worst thing about the whole thing is that their music got taken off radio. The Dixie Chicks made GREAT music that was more country than a lot of their country music peers. I think no matter what your beliefs on politics are it shouldn’t be reflected by banning artist’s music from radio.

You know what?? I think she’s bi-polar..honestly. I personally loved the Dixie Chicks music and even went to one of their concerts.I was so excited for the fresh new music of these 3 ladies. But then all the hoopla started with Natalie ripping on fans and other artists several years ago.Well Natalie you say you haven’t been aware of country music in 6 years..well guess what? I haven’t been aware or given you a though for even longer. So long……

@Jay – what did Merle Haggard say about the President? I tried to find the comment you may be referring to but can’t. If you are by chance talking about Hank Jr., look up the video, watch what he said and how he said it, and then make your own opinion instead of listening to the media. He said nothing wrong…

Dixie Chicks were (are) the best trio ever in Country. No one really comes close to touching them. The whole story was just a sad one and they’ve all been forced to move on. They were not a fraud like Georgetta says. It is what it was, a big shame. But their music was awesome! Even Jesus got the wrong end of the stick on this planet. It’s actually country music’s loss at the end of the day.

The Country Music Family of Fans obviously did the right thing when we shut her out. The only reason I even read this article was because it was from CMIL because Natalie, my dear…. I dont give a D!
You can disappear again now, thanks.

Natalie who?? lol. Bless her heart, she just can’t stop running her mouth. Get over it and stop putting the country music community down and blaming them for your misfortunes. Artist and politics just do not mix. I feel they(artist) should just keep that kind of stuff to themselves.

Just toclear one thing up that I read: the comment from Jay. Merl Haggard wasn’t the one who said that about Obama, it was Hank Jr. and in reality what he said was twisted. He really did not compare the president to Hitler. there was an analogy used with both names, but it wasn’t really comparing the pres. to hitler.
As for the Natalie Maines thing. I agree with the majority of what is being said here. I mean you have to live under a Rock to not know who Jason Aldean is, because he has had cross over success as well. If she was following the Grammy’s then she’d still have to know who he was. He’s listed in the categories! hahaha I think some people just don’t know when to quit. And to constantly put down country music, which is the one thing she has had success in, is rediculous.

@scott – I’m glad there’s at least one person out there that listened to what Hank said, and figured out that he really didn’t say anything bad. It was an analogy that he used. He did not call or compare the president to Hitler. The media and everything twisted Hank’s words. @Jay it wasn’t Merl who said anything, it was Hank Jr.
As for Natalie Maines. How could you not know who Jason Aldean is? She was clearly following the Grammy’s, so she had to have know. There are categories, there have been so much media on this. It’s hard to believe that she hadn’t heard of him. He has had some cross over success too. So even if she didn’t follow country, she’d still know.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake guys. I did mean to say Hank Jr. but to my own shock so I put Merle Haggard. As for the Hank Jr. comment it was obviously taken out of context in the media but when you watch the whole interview that he had he called Obama and Biden the enemy and the three stooges while Natalie said she was ashamed Bush was from Texas. I’m not trying to rip on Hank Jr. cause that is his opinion which everyone has a right to and i think it was wrong to take his song off of Monday Night Football. And I also think it was wrong that the Chicks got basically banned from radio back in 2003 for a comment that I feel was mildly harsh compared to Hank Jr.’s comment. Overall I just think it’s sad when the artists music has to suffer because people get so worked up over a small comment.
