We sent one of our faithful readers (& big-time Toby Keith fan), Ryan Miller, to cover a private Toby Keith concert hosted by iheartradio in New York City last night. Ryan was kind enough to give us a full report from the intimate show with the country music superstar…
I arrived to the Theatre two and half hours early and saw a massive line wrapped around the building. Everyone there was either holding signs, wearing cowboy hats, or had a Toby Keith t-shirt on. I was greeted by Vanessa Wojtusiak, the Manager of Digital Marketing & Programming at Clear Channel Online Music & Radio. She gave me a tour of the facility and explained that the venue was brand new and state of the art. The venue was in pristine condition, fits 300 people at max capacity, and only hosts free concerts for the top names in music. Upon entering the main stage area, I quickly spotted Joey Floyd, guitarist of the Easy Money Band (Toby’s Band) and chatted with him. Joey said this was “out of the box for us” and that we were going to hear “7 songs, but don’t worry, they are good ones”.
A radio personality from New York City’s Q104.3 introduced the band around 7 pm and Toby Keith walked in wearing a white cowboy hat, black and white striped button down shirt, and was backed by his entire Easy Money Band. He jumped right into what he called “the title cut off his upcoming cd: ‘Bullets in the Gun’”. The song is about a man on the run down to Mexico and is being flanked by both the law and a woman. The chorus of the song is “never see it comin’, just hits you by surprise, it’s that cold place in your soul, and the fire in her eyes, makes you come together – like wild horses when they run, now the cards are on the table and the bullets in the gun”. It’s a great story song and has a very catchy tune.
Toby followed up the song by saying to the crowd “It’s good to be in the NYC”. He then introduced his next song “Somewhere Else”, which will also be off his upcoming cd. He said it was written by himself and Bobby Pinson (who has co-written hits with Toby such as “She’s a Hottie”, “She Never Cried In Front of Me” and “Lost You Anyway”). The song was upbeat, fun, and could be a big hit if he decides to release the song.
Toby’s next spoke about his new single out on country radio and said “I was driving my motorcycle through trailers [a trailer park] and thought of this song. So let’s have some country in NYC”. He proceeded to perform “Trailerhood”. The crowd really got loud when he subsituted “New York Giants football on TV” instead of the the normal lyrics. A video of this song (including a pre-show interview) can be found HERE.
His next statement was plain and simple, “These songs don’t need an introduction, I don’t think” and he ripped right into “Who’s Your Daddy”. This song was highlighted by the 3 person horn section of the Easy Money Band which sounded fantastic in such a small venue. He next said “Here is a good drinking song we can all sing along to” and sang “I Love This Bar”. Next up was “God Love Her” which again sounded amazing with the horn section and all of the Band members hitting on every cylinder. Toby was smiling and having a great time all throughout.
Toby next stated “my dad use to say this” and that the song was “to all the dudes who ain’t old enough to cut the mustard”. He of course, was eluding to his hit “Ain’t As Good As He Once Was” which was sung brilliantly with many humorous changes to the lyrics in the song. After ending this song he informed the crowd that he was out of time and he got a huge ovation. He then surprised the crowd and said “let’s do one more, I don’t care, I like to get really Western when I come up here [to New York City]“. He then sang “Beer For My Horses” and the whole crowd, again, sang along word for word.
The P.C. Richard & Sons Theatre was a perfect venue for such an intimate concert. All photos are courtesy of Jeremy Harris of iHeart Radio. The full gallery can be seen HERE.
All in all, it was a phenomenal show in a fantastic venue. Thank you to CountryMusicIsLove, iHeart Radio, and Clear Channel Radio for such a great opportunity.

Toby Keith graces the cover of the latest issue of People Country, on newsstands now. Inside, Keith opens up about his home life and his relationship with his 13 year old son, Stelen.
At home (& on the field), he’s “coach” not a famous country music star. Toby told the mag that he has been coaching his son’s football team for the past six years.
“Kids do better with that than adults do,” Keith tells People Country. “They are just, ‘Hey, coach! Can I go in?’”
When they’re not playing football, you’ll probably find Toby, Stelen and the 13 year old’s “herd of friends” playing basketball at their home.
After years of touring, Keith says he’s learned to stay grounded.
“You get a thick skin early on in this business,” he says. “And you learn what you are willing to put up with and what you aren’t,” he says. “The bottom line? You are your own guy.”
For more on Toby’s home life, be sure to pick up the September issue of People Country.
