Five Questions with Krystal Keith
Country newcomer Krystal Keith isn’t exactly new to the Country music scene. She grew up surrounded by it.
Fans were first introduced to Krystal during an awards show where she sang a duet with her father, superstar Toby Keith. Although there was much excitement around her national debut, Krystal went on to complete her college degree at the University of Oklahoma per her parents wishes.
Krystal is now ready to share her music with Country music fans. Her self-titled four-track EP was rushed to iTunes earlier this month after much excitement surrounded her song “Daddy Dance With Me,” a surprise gift she recorded for her father and first played for him at her wedding. The EP advances Krystal’s highly anticipated full-length album, Whiskey & Lace, which will be released later this year.
CountryMusicIsLove recently caught up with Krystal Keith to discuss “Daddy Dance With Me,” her upcoming album, and more. See what she had to say below…
Five Questions with Krystal Keith
CMIL: “Daddy Dance With Me” is such a personal song to both you and your father – what made you decide to release this track first?
KK: We had such an amazing reaction from those that had heard it and it kind of caught a buzz that we weren’t expecting this far in advance of the album. We kept getting questions about it and people really encouraged us to release it for fathers day and wedding season, so we made the decision to go ahead and get it out there.
CMIL: Do you feel that you are better prepared to start your career now that you have finished college and taken time to learn who you are as a person versus entering the Country music scene right out of high school?
KK: Absolutely, you grow up so much in those 5 years after high school. Having that time to really find my way and learn to define who I am and what my goals are for life as well as the life experiences I had in college have had an immense impact on the type of writer and singer I am.
CMIL: What can fans expect from your upcoming album?
KK: A wave of emotions. There are funny songs, sad songs, mad lover songs. You’ll get blues, rock and country. It is a really well rounded balanced album that takes you through a range of feelings. There are things on the album that are completely different from what you’ve already seen on the EP. The EP was a sampler but there are still some surprises left to explore.
CMIL: The album title – ‘Whiskey & Lace’ – seems representative of your personality. Would you agree?
KK: Definitely, that is why I chose that title. I actually went into a writing session with Rodney Clawson and Lynn Hutton with the idea to write a song called ‘Whiskey and Lace’ knowing that the title is a perfect description of me for my first album. The lyrics of the song don’t necessarily describe me at all (the song is about a stripper) but the title is me to a tee. I don’t drink girly fruity drinks, and I don’t really like beer, so when I drink, my drink of choice is a shot of Jack Daniels, but I’m also really girly.
CMIL: What have you learned from your father’s long career that has helped you start yours?
KK: Be you and put in the work. He has always paved his own path and has worked more than overtime to make his dreams come true and get what he wants out of his career. So between his determination to stick to his guns and his work ethic, I would say that success was definitely his payoff.
